Why Do People Gain More Weight During the Holidays than Any Other Time of Year?
You may be wondering why it is that people gain more weight during the winter holidays than any other time of year. A study was done in
the early 2000’s by the National Institutes of Health that determined
just that. They determined the following things about Americans:
- The average American gained 1.8 lbs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day.
- Overweight and obese Americans before the holidays were more likely to gain 5 lbs. or more during that 6 week period.
- The biggest two factors in weight gain were lack of activity and excess hunger.
- The weight that is gained at that time of year is never lost .
The excess hunger at this time of year is most likely due to the excess amount of refined sugar and carbohydrates that people consume throughout the season. The more of them you eat, the more hungry you will be every few hours. These foods immediately spike insulin – the fat-storing hormone that will keep them out of fat-burning mode for up to 48 hours. These substances also causes individuals to feel lethargic which could explain why many are less active, lounging, relaxing, and overeating the holidays away.
So for each time that an individual consumes refined sugar and carbs, they will spend the next 24-48 hours in FAT-STORING mode. Doesn’t it make sense then that daily consumption of sugar and carbs will result in some people actually spending every single day of the holiday season in FAT-STORING mode as opposed to FAT-BURNING. The experts agree. Losing more than a pound or two a week is a quick fix…not a permanent solution. And the rub is studies have shown that people who listen to the false promises and drop those pounds too rapidly, quickly return to their original weight… and more. - Rapid weight loss is mostly water. Your body is 70% water, so it’s easy to lose weight quickly if you deprive your body of the nourishment it needs. Any diet that dehydrates you will create quick, dramatic weight loss…but not for long!
- Lose weight too fast and you slow your metabolism. When you skip meals or crash diet, your body is programmed to think it’s starving and slows your metabolism to conserve energy. After all, our bodies are designed to help us survive when it thinks it’s being starved.

If your legs are out of proportion with the rest of you, I’m sure it doesn’t make you feel any better that even a beautiful armenian reality star celebrity was recently on the cover of Life and Style magazine where she was quoted as saying something like, “Yeah, I have cellulite, so what!” The reality is, stars can do something about cellulite and oversized thighs, and so can you.
I have good news for you, and it might take you a few minutes to even believe in this possibility, but you can trim and reshape your thighs and lose the excess lumps and bumps. I’m serious. I promise. If you are the body type that carries excess fat and weight through your hips, buttocks, and thighs your problem may not be as simple as diet and exercise. The surgeons might suggest liposuction to vaccuum the fat from those areas only to cause so much trauma that you end up with more cellulite on the surface of your skin, not to mention the thousands of dollars they’ll charge, oh and the life-risking anesthesia.
I can share this with authority from personal experience as I have recently lost over 4 inches from each of my thighs. Seriously! Someday I might even show you pictures. But here’s the deal… your thigh issues aren’t so much about the exercise you do or don’t do, but they are more the result of the hormones your body is producing and worse yet, the hormones you are likely consuming in your meat and dairy and even plant estrogens from soy products. And did you know that when you have fat accumulation as a result of excess estrogen, that your own fat cells begin to manufacture even more estrogen? The more you have, the more you become an out of control estrogen factory! Did I mention that estrogen is a fat storing hormone?
So, girls with cellulite have too much estrogen floating around in their system which makes it difficult to lose weight on their thighs. That estrogen is causing fat to accumulate on the surface of your skin. Bummer. But the good news is you can start by detoxing the estrogen in your system with food and supplements. I’ll get to that info in a moment.
If the above describes your body, then you have an even bigger thing to be concerned about: this excess estrogen build up in your system is so toxic that it can make you more at risk for breast cancer than those who do not have this issue. So even if you like your curves, like curvy Kim claims to, you should still be aware of the consequences and the potential threat of excess estrogen, especially from external sources of estrogen. I call it “counterfeit estrogen.”
Recently I was shocked when I saw two very young sisters at a pool in swimsuits - one was about nine years old and the other was around thirteen. Neither one of them appeared to be overweight, but both of them had cellulite on their upper hips and thighs.
